opportunity-strikes

Gamers this has been on my mind for a while, and I've been Going Through It so I can't thoughtfully articulate it yet but: the little things can, and absolutely will, save you.

opportunity-strikes

It's noticing the bunny in the yard eating dandelions one by one. It's buying lemonade from eager kids at a stand using change scrounged from the center console of your car. It's enjoying the smell of hot pavement steaming after a brief summer rain. It's taking a breath that feels fuller and more satisfying than usual.

It's painstakingly training your brain to notice the small but rampant string of good things woven through every single day. It's that same kind of training that you have to do in order to undo the years of anxious patterns that have been ruthlessly hammered into the soft pathways of your mind.

I don't know how to connect the two dots, but the connection is there. I know it's there because something as silly as the satisfying crunch of a knife cutting a crisp grilled cheese sandwich in half has meant the difference between hanging on and panicking during a stressful day.

I can't explain how the many small things I did and asked for and noticed over YEARS finally coalesced into something solid and real and steadying but they did. I'm not saying that petting the one patch of fur between your pets ears that's a little softer than any other spot is going to cure your depression tomorrow.

But I'm suggesting that when you stitch it together with a thousand other things from a thousand other days, it might just rescue you from the one day in your future that would have destroyed you otherwise.

you're in the habit of denying yourself things.

if someone asked you directly, you would say that you love a little treat. you like iced coffee and getting the cookie. you drink juice out of a fancy cup sometimes, and often do use your candles until they gutter out helplessly.

but you hesitate about buying the 20 dollar hand mixer because, like. you could just use your arms. you weren't raised rich. you don't get to just spend the 20 dollars (remember when that could cover lunch?), at least - you don't spend that without agonizing over it first, trying to figure out the cost-benefits like you are defending yourself in front of a jury. yes, this rice cooker could seriously help you. but you do know how to make stovetop rice and it really isn't that hard. how many pies or brownies would you actually make, in order to make that hand mixer worthwhile?

what's wild is that if the money was for a friend, it would already be spent. you'd fork over 40 without blinking an eye, just to make them happy. the difference is that it's for you, so you need to justify it.

and it sneaks in. you ration yourself without meaning to - you don't finish the pint of ice cream, even though you want to. the next time you go to the store, you say ah, i really shouldn't, and then you walk away. you save little bits of your precious things - just in case. sometimes you even go so far as putting that one thing in your shopping cart. and then just leaving it there, because maybe-one-day, but not right now, there's other stuff going on.

you do self-care, of course. but you don't do it more than like, 3 days in a row. after that it just feels a little bit over-the-edge. like. you can't live in decadence, the economy is so bad right now, kid.

so you don't buy the rice cooker. you can-and-will spend the time over the stove. you can withstand the little sorrows. denial and discipline are practically synonyms. and you're not spoiled.

it's just - it's not always a rice cooker. sometimes it is a person or a job or a hug. sometimes it is asking for help. sometimes it is the summer and your college degree. sometimes it is looking down at scabbed knees and feeling a strange kind of falling, like you can't even recognize the girl you used to be. sometimes it is your handprint looking unsteady.

sometimes it is tuesday, and you didn't get fired, and you want to celebrate. but what is it you like, even? you search around your little heart and come up empty. you're so used to denying that all your desires draw a blank.

oh fuck. see, this is the perfect opportunity. if you had a mixer, you'd make a cake.

i feel like we dont talk enough about how distressing and disturbing memory loss issues are. forgetting what you were talking about halfway through a sentence, putting something down and instantly forgetting where you put it. having to reread one paragraph over and over again because by the time youve moved onto the next sentence you dont remember what the one before it said. always doubting if your memories of things are real, not being able to remember important life events.

its so incredibly scary, it feels like your mind is constantly playing tricks on you and you start to doubt whats real and what isnt.

“i forgot” is treated like a lazy excuse when it’s genuinely such a big issue for so many people.

EXACTLY!!! IM FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE OUT HERE AND IM GETTING CALLED LAZY OR UNCARING OR SMTH IM EQUALLY DISTRESSED MAN IM SORRY

How to make plasma in the microwave using a grape (don't)

For those of you who don't want to watch the whole video (I recommend watching it, if only for the guy's extremely blase attitude to fire and poisonous gas in his microwave, here is just the plasma part:

image

And the crazy thing is, even though people have been making videos of this for over 20 years, scientists didn't actually know why it happens until 2019.

Basically, plasma is what happens to matter when it is superheated enough that electrons start to come loose from the atoms they belong to and just create a soup of charged particles. This Science article explains well how this effect is created by a halved grape connected by a thin strip of skin:

"Water-heavy grapes trap the wavelengths of energy microwave ovens emit because the waves are roughly the same size as the diameter of grapes. That energy starts charging up electrolytes inside the fruit, which then flow from one half of the grape to the other—using the strip of skin like an electrical wire and gaining energy as they go. The current quickly burns through the skin, causing the charged electrolytes to try to jump from one half of the grape to the other, supercharging the surrounding air into a bright flare of plasma—the same light-emitting state of matter responsible for the sun's rays and fluorescent lighting."

You can see in these energy diagrams of the microwaved grapes that when the grape halves are moved closer together, alllllll of the energy that is normally distributed throughout the two grape halves condenses down into an extremely small area between them to form a hotspot of radiation. The energy of this area is so great that it can heat the surrounding gas enough to turn it into plasma.

All this to say that this is a super cool quirk of science that you definitely should NOT try at home (the scientists doing the experiment to find out why this happened destroyed 12 different microwaves in the process lol)

Hey, PSA for my fellow disabled people: UPS workers are trying to negotiate a new contract, and it looks like it's leading to a strike soon. Now, I am absolutely all for this, they need safe working conditions and should strike if need be, but for us?

Please contact your doctors and make sure you're prepared in any way possible. This will affect many of you, whether that's through med deliveries, oxygen tanks, or other one-use supplies. If you live in America, try to get in contact with an insurance case worker for resources and advice if you're able.

Stay safe, and hope that the precaution isn't necessary.

i attend a community college thats about half an hour from my house. im fortunate enough to know someone willing to give me a ride to my classes (they have classes too and live nearby), but if not id be out $320 just for a five week class on rides alone. ($1/ride, 2 rides to get to school, 2 rides back.) Not to mention the almost $800 they took for a single english class.

It don’t make sense

Dear tumblr staff,

stop. its ok. you don’t need to do these things. just focus on functionality(like the video player). we don’t need these little updates when somethings(like the video player) need your focus. thank you for your time but really, tumblr looks great. try to fix more important things(like the video player) so that we can all properly enjoy the features of tumblr(like the video player)

CGI animators should unionize next. normally, their jobs would be too precarious to strike, since studios would replace them without a second thought, but if it's part of this larger general film strike, they might finally have meaningful power to better their working conditions

studentofetherium

if CGI animators unionized, it would kill the MCU. straight up. the the entire business model is built on exploiting CGI animators

THEY ARE TRYING!!!!! SIGN THE PETITION TO GET THE DISNEY ANIMATORS' UNION RECOGNIZED

clustxr

this petition is from IATSE (union), btw! it actually has credibility, unlike most change.org/etc petitions! please sign it!!

captaincrais

correcting misinfo: the petition linked is about adding animation production workers, who were not previously union jobs, into TAG (the animation guild.) a lot of animation jobs in the US are unionized, it’s just that TAG isn’t as strong a union as WG/SAG-AFTRA. unionizing production workers is a big step toward a stronger union!
